Warrenton carried a lead into the sixth inning but dropped a non-conference game to St. Dominic Monday.
Warrenton scored runs in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead in their 3-2 loss to St. Dominic. Makayla Witthaus scored in the second inning on Paige Campbell’s one-out sacrifice fly. The Lady Warriors added another run in the third inning on Witthaus’ RBI double to score Kiera Daniel. St. Dominic pitcher Abi Mandrell struck out Maddisyn Hoeslcher with two outs and runners on second and third to prevent further damage for the Warrior offense.
Warrenton got the leadoff batter on in both the fifth and sixth innings but was unable to extend their lead.
“I thought one through nine we were getting good contact on and moving the runners,” Warrenton softball coach Chad Berrey said. “We tried to play small ball there for a little bit. It just didn’t work out, but that’s not going to curve our decisions later on in the season.”
After allowing just one run through two bases loaded jams in the third and fourth innings, Kylie Witthaus pitched around another jam in the fifth inning. After the first two batters reached base, Witthaus recorded three straight outs to preserve Warrenton’s 2-1 lead.
“What we saw out of Kylie today is very ensuring going in postseason,” Berrey said. “Champions when things get hard, they work harder and they get through the jams and like she just did, that was incredible what she did.”
After Warrenton’s scoreless top of the sixth inning, St. Dominic took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Marissa Schneider reached base on a hit by pitch with one out. After Witthaus retired Addison Henke on a popout, Angie Williams connected on a two-run home run to give St. Dominic their first lead of the game.
“When you’re pitching against a Class 5 school like Dominic, they got good hitters one through nine,” Berrey said. “So I wouldn’t say it’s a bad pitch. She hit the location. It was a rise ball in. It was a perfect pitch and great hitters can just go up there and get it.”
Warrenton sophomore Audrey Lanzone reached base on a single with two outs in the seventh inning. Kylie Witthaus flew out to left field to end the game.
Makayla Witthaus and Kiera Daniel each recorded two hits for the Lady Warriors. Daniel stole three bases. Kylie Witthaus pitched all six innings on the mound for Warrenton. She allowed three runs and struck out nine batters.
The loss snapped Warrenton’s four game winning streak. The winning streak included wins over conference foes St. Charles West and North Point and against county foe Wright City.
Warrenton followed up their loss to St. Dominic with a pair of conference wins. They beat St. Charles 15-0 in four innings Sept. 12. They earned a 9-2 win over Orchard Farm Sept. 14 to move to 4-0 in GAC North games.
