The Liberty Christian Lady Eagles are looking to hit the ground running this season with a new coach and a new core group of players.
After the Lady Eagles won multiple state championships under coach Butch Clark, Liberty Christian enters their first season under the leadership of Kim Meyer. She was an assistant under Clark prior to taking the head coaching job. The Lady Eagles also will undergo changes on the court. Three of Liberty Christian’s top four scorers last season graduated.
“It’s a huge transition for all of us because the three seniors were such big leaders,” Meyer said. “They weren’t just seniors. They all had a huge, crucial part in everything that we did. Losing them, you can feel it but it just feels like a new family. It’s just almost borderline not even the same. Which is good for all these new faces.”
Liberty Christian will be led by junior Lauren Moss, who averaged over 15 points per game last season, which was second among all Lady Eagles. She led Liberty Christian with over four rebounds per game.
“I'm excited to see where we end up this year because we've obviously lost like three of our starters,” Moss said. “So I'm excited to see where we go. I think we can progress as the year goes on and I think we'll be good.”
Meyer said Moss is a “huge leader” for the Lady Eagles.
Jubilee McGowen also returns for the Lady Eagles after playing in 30 games last season. McGowen cited the benefits of having Meyer take over the program since she knew the returning players from her time as an assistant coach.
“I feel like when just a totally new coach comes in and there's no relationship built with that coach, it's like, where do I stand,” McGowen said. “Can I be funny or joke around or do I always have to be serious? Or can I go to them with things or not? So I think having a relationship with the coach is a lot better than just a walk in.”
Meyer is focusing on character building and rebuilding the program from the ground up with the basic foundations of the game. She stressed she is focused on the process right now, while also remaining optimistic they will see positive results on the court.
“I think they’re going to shock themselves on how much they already have ready,” Meyer said. “They’re getting to know each other like the ones that were here are getting to know the new ones and the new ones are here getting to know the game. But they’re already kind of shocking each other I think of just how quick they’re picking up on it.”
