Liberty Christian used strong second and third quarters to cruise to a 27-point win over Thomas Jefferson last week.

The Lady Eagles outscored the Titans 22-6 in the second and third quarters in their 44-17 win over Thomas Jefferson last week. The win moved Liberty Christian to 2-0 on the season. They beat Lighthouse Prep 35-32 in their season opener.

“They really started to find some chemistry with one another,” Liberty Christian girls basketball coach Kim Meyer said. “Towards the beginning of the game, they were still a little bit nervous They’ve had their first game, but...  there’s more people here tonight. So they had the nerves. But I just said, hey, you guys just need to use each other, trust each other. They did and it worked out well.”

After falling behind 2-0 in the opening quarter, the Lady Eagles went on a 7-0 run. Sophomore Trina Scheltens scored the Lady Eagles’ first basket of the game. Lauren Moss scored five of her game-high 26 points to help the Lady Eagles build a 7-2 lead. Moss scored all 11 of Liberty Christian’s points in the second quarter. The Lady Eagles led 20-9 at halftime.

Liberty Christian used a balanced offensive attack in the third quarter. Moss scored five of their 11 third quarter points. Anna Scheltens added four points and Madison Scheer scored a basket for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagle defense only surrendered six points in the middle two quarters to help Liberty Christian build a 20-point lead heading into the final quarter. Liberty Christian switched to a box and one defense to take the ball out of the hands of Thomas Jefferson’s top scorer.

“We had to figure that out during a play,” Meyer said. “It was just like we had time to write it down. I tried to relay it and they weren’t quite understanding it. But then I just kind of explained it to them the next time we got a time out and they got it.”

Moss registered a double-double with 26 points and 12 steals. She also led the Lady Eagles with six rebounds. Scheltens and Mallory Boenker each had five rebounds.
