Kackley wins Mike Spoede Invitational

Warrenton senior Phillip Kackley earned a win on Warrenton’s home course at last week’s Mike Spoede Invitational.

Kackley ran the 5K race in 17:08, beating Tyler Anderson from Ft. Zumwalt East by eight seconds to win another event. Warrenton head coach Jeremy Collins thinks Kackley made major improvements this year after missing half of last season due to an injury.

“He is a strong runner and I think he has learned a lot about how to race a 5K from the start of the season,” Collins said.

Warrenton senior Wyatt Claiborne also logged a top-five finish. He finished fourth in the race with a time of 18:05. Collins said Claiborne and Kackley are “probably the best duo that our program has had.”

Jacob Beckemeyer, Matthew Craven and Bryan Guerrero also had counting scores for Warrenton. Beckemeyer placed 10th with a time of 18:51. Craven placed 16th with a time of 19:33. Guerrero ran the race in 20:06 and placed 22nd.

The Warrenton boys cross country team placed second overall, with a final score of 53 points. Marquette won the event with a final score of 47 points.

“I’m extremely proud of their effort on a hot day and on a course that has been our hardest 5k course of the season,” Collins said.

The Warrenton Lady Warriors placed third out of four teams who had enough runners to compete as a team. Alexis Ruff led all Warrenton runners with an 11th place finish. She ran the race in 23:30, a new personal record.

“This is the third time in a row where she has run a PR (personal record),” Collins said. “She is a really tough runner and when she gets a little more experience, she is going to run some fast times.”

Camryn Petersmeyer and Briana Grooms each registered top-20 finishes. Petersmeyer placed 17th and finished with a time of 25:41. Grooms finished the race 13 seconds later and placed 18th. Ashlynn Reeves and Jadyn Hopper each had counting times for Warrenton. Reeves placed 26th and Hopper finished 28th.

“All seven of the runners really competed well even in the heat,” Collins said. “Sometimes, there are circumstances that make it hard to run really fast, but this group is always going to run their guts out and I love that about this group.”
