Warrenton senior Phillip Kackley set a school record in his fifth place finish at the Missouri Southern Stampede competition in Joplin.

Kackley finished the competition in 16:19, which earned him a fifth place finish. The time was also a school record. Kackley broke Nathan Norwald’s school record, which he set in 2016.

“Kackley missed about half the season last year due to a stress fracture and is motivated to have a big season,” Warrenton cross country coach Jeremy Collins said. “It was great to see him have a race like that.  To be honest, he surprised me a little with that time.  Now the question is, will he go under 16 minutes?”

Fellow Warrenton senior Wyatt Claiborne also had a strong race and placed 15th. Claiborne ran his second fastest time in his high school career with a time of 16:52. Jacob Beckemeyer placed 42nd with a personal record of 17:54, a 1:46 improvement on his personal record heading into the season. Bryan Guerrero placed 66th with a time of 18:21 and Noah Cline placed 122nd out of 232 runners. He finished the competition in 19:29.

“He (Cline) was dealing with allergies and he was really struggling before the race,” Collins said. “Noah placed 122nd with a PR of 19:29.  Noah is a tough kid and he went out there even though he wasn’t close to 100%.”

Nolan Grooms, Steve Schmitt and Alex Cutler all ran personal records for the Warriors. Warrenton placed seventh out of 29 teams at the competition.

The Warrenton Lady Warriors placed 20th out of 22 teams at the competition. They were led by Camryn Petersmeyer, who placed 89th out of 197 runners. She finished the competition in 23:28. Freshman Alexis Ruff placed 93rd with a time of 23:35, a personal record. Briana Grooms placed 127th with a season best time of 24:53. Ashlynn Reeves ran a personal record 26:26 and placed 160th. Reeves’ time was 1:34 faster than her previous time.

“Her goal was to get under 28 minutes and so she went out and crushed the course,” Collins said.

Abby Palmer finished the competition with a time of 35:05.

Warrenton is slated to compete Saturday at Gans Creek in Columbia.

“Everyone has been working hard and having some great workouts,” Collins said. “Gans Creek is another meet where we can run fast times and it will be fun to see what we will do.”
