Senior Kyle Johnson threw six solid innings to lead the Wright City Wildcats to today’s district championship game.
Wright City beat top-seeded Lutheran St. Charles 6-2 Monday. The win moves Wright City to today’s district championship game against St. Charles West.
The Wildcats got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Duan McRoberts, Logan McCartney and Ian Wolff all reached base to start the game and scored in the inning. Wolff led the Wildcats with three hits in the game. McCartney and Bryce Williams had two hits.
“When you’re the away team and the lower seed, scratching some runs across especially a crooked number is big time,” Wright City coach Ryan Raterman said. “I think it kind of shocked them and they were like, oh no.”
Johnson added to the Wright City lead with a two-out double, which scored two runs. Johnson started the game for Wright City and gave up one earned run in six innings. He allowed five hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out nine Lutheran St. Charles batters in the game. Both runs scored in the sixth inning with Wright City leading 6-0.
“He pitched really efficient,” Raterman said. “I don’t know how many strikeouts he had but he was Kyle Johnson today and we needed that. We just needed a big game out of him and that’s what he did. Offensively, as well. He hit a big clutch two-out double that scored two runs earlier in the game.”
Senior Mason Kunkel threw a scoreless seventh inning to clinch the win for Wright City.
This is the second consecutive season Wright City has advanced to the district championship game. After losing in the district championship game last season, the Wildcats have their sights set on winning the district title.
“You can kind of hear the clubhouse chatter of like hey we’re going to the ’ship again,” Raterman said. “Let’s finish it this time. Like all that kind of stuff. That’s huge. The boys expect to be here now.”
The Class 4, District 6 championship game between Wright City and St. Charles West will be played at 4:15 p.m. at Orchard Farm High School.
