Early district loss doesn’t diminish strong year for Warrenton girls

Despite falling in the first round of district play, the Warrenton girls basketball team had an overall successful season, finishing the year with a record of 19-8 and winning the Gateway Athletic Conference North Championship.

Even with the 64-51 loss to Hannibal in districts, coach Hannah Logan was pleased with the success of the team overall and said that the final loss of the season was partly due to flat play.

“As a team we were flat on both ends of the court,” she said. “We could not get momentum going for either end. We didn’t execute as well as I hoped and struggled with handling the pressure and making smart plays with the basketball.”

On the whole, though, Logan said the team met most of the goals that were set prior to the season.

“We had three big goals as a team,” said Logan. “Win the GAC North Conference; we won back-to-back 2023 and 2024. Another goal was to win our home tournament. We received the one seed and won the tournament in an exciting game against a good Liberty team. Our third goal was to have a winning record which we did 19-8. One goal we did not reach, and I believe we had the chances to meet but did not come to play a full 32 minutes some games, was to win 20 games this season.”

The season also offered some moments to remember, and Logan offered up a trio of specific games that came to mind.

“I think the championship game against Liberty is a very exciting game to remember,” she said. “Beating North Point after being down by 21 points in the first half and beating Waynesville in the Washington Tournament was an exciting great team win.”

With so many victories and positives, Logan was pleased with the team performance.

“Overall, a very successful season, nothing to hang our heads on,” she said. “We accomplished a lot and overcame a lot of obstacles that came in the way. We were a very young team when looking at varsity experience and I think all players grew in stepping up as players, talent, and confidence.”

Looking ahead to next season, Logan says there is plenty of room for optimism.

“I am excited for next season, I am excited to see the work and improvement players put in this summer and what we will be able to accomplish once again next year,” she said. “We graduate three big leaders (Nevaeh Hill, Sophi Mueller, and Isabel Benke), but return eight varsity players who are ready to step up as well as have a big sophomore, freshman and incoming freshman group(s) who will all bring great talent to our program.”
