Busy first day for local election signups

Posted

Candidates seeking election for local city governments, school boards and emergency districts wasted no time in filing their paperwork on the first day of candidate registrations Dec. 6.

Candidate filing is open from now until Dec. 27 for those who want to appear on the ballot in local municipal elections in April.

Competition is already brewing for several elected offices where challengers and incumbents acted immediately to put their names in the race.

Here’s how the first day of candidate filing turned out in elections around Warren County:

Warren County R-III School Board

One incumbent and two potential newcomers signed up for three Warrenton-area school board seats on the first day of filing. The incumbent, Franci Schwartz, is a multi-term board member and former educator. The other two candidates so far are Carolyn Spraggs, making her second run for school board, and Keith Harbison, who is a new candidate.

Incumbents Rodger Tucker and Rich Barton have yet to register.

Wright City R-II School Board

Wright City’s school district saw two challengers make their return for another shot at the school board. Frank Zykan and Beth Dean, both of whom  fell short in 2022 elections, signed up on the first day. They’re joined by newcomer Monica Hepperman.

Incumbents Alice Jensen, Heidi Halleman, and Michael Bates did not register on the first day.

Warrenton city government

The city of Warrenton has four offices on the ballot: the mayor and three aldermen. Mayor Eric Schleuter and Aldermen Larry Corder, Steven Cullom, and Jeff Jaspering all turned out to run for re-election.

The sole challenger in the races so far is Ward 1 resident Pat Mahon, who registered to run against Corder.

Wright City government

One old name and one new name were registered in races for two seats on the Wright City Board of Alderman. For Ward 1, incumbent Don Andrews will run for a second term. In Ward 2, Kim Arbuthnot, the outgoing Wright City Chamber of Commerce president, will attempt to join the board.

Ward 2 incumbent Nathan Rohr did not file on the first day.

Marthasville city government

Marthasville’s mayor and two aldermen are up for election this year. Mayor David Lange and West Ward Alderman Leo Meyer were the sole candidates to register Dec. 6. East Ward incumbent Gary Dixon did not file on the first day.

Truesdale city government

The mayor and two aldermen will be elected in Truesdale. Mayor Chris Watson registered for re-election, as did Alderman Jerry Cannon. Incumbent Robert Green didn’t put in an appearance on the first day of filing.

Innsbrook Village Board of Trustees

Cynthia Cook, one of three trustees up for election, registered for the April ballot on Tuesday. Fellow incumbents Jeffry Thomsen and Dan Reuter didn’t file on the first day.

Warren County Ambulance District

Incumbent Diane Grimes registered to retain her seat representing Subdistrict 1 on the ambulance district’s board of directors. She was the sole candidate to file on Tuesday. A seat representing Subdistrict 4 is also up for election.

Marthasville Community Ambulance District

No candidates registered on the first day of filing for two seats on the board of directors, representing Subdistrict 1 and Subdistrict 4.

Warrenton Fire Protection District

Two candidates registered for two board of directors seats on Tuesday. Former board member Malissa Booth will run to make a return in a seat with a four-year term. Incumbent Laura McIntosh, meanwhile, filed to run for a separate seat with a six-year term.
