Marthasville Board of Aldermen discuss ongoing water line projects in monthly meeting

During their April 17 meeting the Marthasville Board of Aldermen discussed park projects as well as the progress of their ongoing initiatives to update the city’s infrastructure.

The evening’s proceedings began with a public hearing on the annexation of a parcel of land outside the city limits where a special education school is looking to expand. There was no public comment during the hearing although Mayor David Lange noted that they would still be open to written objections until April 30.

No other action was taken.

The board swore in their recently elected members and certified the results of the April 2 election, including the passage of a three percent sales tax on adult use, non-medical marijuana sold within the city limits.

The board also heard a report on their continuing efforts to improve and modernize the city’s infrastructure, including water services and road maintenance from Ryan Johanning of Cochran Engineering.

Marthasville has been in the process of upgrading their water lines, as a part of that process they were ordered to begin treating their water with chlorine by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Mayor David Lange said that the projects were nearing completion and was pleased to report that nearly all of the city’s former cast iron pipes had been replaced. As part of the project they have also been required by the DNR to test their water systems for bacterial contaminants like e. Coli and those samples had returned clean.

“We’ve been doing samples in both wells, the brand new well and the old number two well for the past, over 12 months, and neither one of those sources have ever come back with a sample that our water’s bad,” Mayor Lange said.

As that project nears completion Marthasville has also been working on improving their roads and has also contracted Cochran Engineering for the improvements. They discussed the widening of some roads like Ozark Street although they acknowledged that there would be some difficulties with narrow right-of-ways.

During his mayor’s report Lange outlined some of the city’s expenses from the previous month and that he planned to dispute one of the charges, although the board decided to approve the rest.

Those charges included $14,450 from waterline and street improvements as well as repairs to one of the pumps at Marthasville Ballpark. Mayor Lange said that the pumps were installed in 2019 at a cost of roughly $17,000 each and the quote to repair one was just under $5,000.

Earlier in the meeting they heard from Don Deeker of the parks board about the city’s upcoming events to celebrate Daniel Boone’s arrival to the area on April 27. They discussed the measures that were being taken to prepare for the celebration like setting up barricades and blocking streets for the city parks that will play host to the events.

That event will take place in Marthasville on April 27 beginning at 10 a.m.
