Brown back at the helm to lead Wright City

For the Wright City boys basketball team, the hope for the 2021-2022 season is to improve on last season’s 10-14 record.

Head Coach Kenneth Brown, who is back at the helm for the first time since 2018, believes that the Wildcats’ team chemistry is what will help them continue to get better.

Despite a difficult start to the season, Brown believes the Wildcats can put together a solid season.

“We want to be better than we have been, we’re struggling right now. We lost to Warrenton and Hermann pretty convincingly,” said Brown. “We are still trying to develop (chemistry).”

Helping to lead the way for the Wildcats as the season progresses will be a trio of seniors — Hayden Beck (all-conference last season), Trent Bruning, and Kyle Johnson.

“As long as we get those three to play well I think we will be okay,” said Brown. “They will help us out tremendously.”

The key to improving on the results of last season and as this season progresses, according to Brown, is mastering the defensive scheme that’s been put into place.

“We can improve defensively. Last year they were a 2-3 zone team and I’m trying to get them to be more of a man-to-man team,” Brown told The Record. “We’re working on different offenses they will see, learning to help each other out, looking at the team aspect. We are getting better at it every day. It’s hard to get used to not staying in one spot, but you can’t just stay — everyone can shoot these days. Everyone has to be accountable.”

Rounding out the Wildcats’ roster are sophomores Denzel Dowdy and Carleon Jones, and juniors Trey Brakensick, Denzel Dowdy, Justin Jones, Tim Sheff, Ricardo Uribe and Hayden Waters.

Wildcat boys grab first win of the season

Hayden Beck scored a team-high 18 points and was one of four players in double figures in Wright City’s 74-62 victory over St. Louis Blue Knights on Tuesday night.

Kyle Johnson followed with 15 points and a team-best 12 rebounds. Tim Sheff and Trent Bruning added 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Wildcats shot 51% from the field, including a 44% clip from long range.

Tied at 15-apiece at the end of the opening quarter, Wright City (1-2) outscored its oppponent 43-17 in the middle two quarters.

First-year coach gets first varsity win

The Wright City girls basketball team grabbed its first win of the season last Tuesday in a 39-11 triumph over Maplewood. The win was the first at the varsity level for coach Abby Modaff.

Jasmin Simpson had a stellar game, making nine of 18 shots from the field for 25 points. She also led the way with 12 rebounds, eight steals and four assists. Kaedyn Johnson and Paige Reese also had six points apiece for the Wildcats.

LCA girls still unbeaten at 9-0

The red-hot-shooting Liberty Christian girls are still torching opponents as they recorded their ninth straight victory to open the season Tuesday.

The Eagles received 15 points from Andrea Mueller in a 78-29 rout of Mississippi Valley Christian. Gracie Foran added 14 points and Sophi Mueller and Adison Roden followed with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Liberty Christian raced out to a 27-2 lead in the first quarter and led 42-8 at halftime.

The Eagles cruised to an easy 66-8 win over Westwood Baptist Academy Friday. Andrea Mueller had a team-high 18 points and Roden added 16.

Eagle boys at 6-3 so far

Junior Deacon Forrest had a team-high 18 points, while senior Cole Christian followed with 10. Senior Caleb Schneider chipped in with nine points for Liberty Christian, which trailed by eight at halftime.
