Warrenton’s Zach Bristol is finding success on the track in his senior season.
A three-year track and field athlete, Bristol won the 400-meter dash at the GAC North meet earlier this month. The senior placed third in the 400-meter dash at the Class 4, District 4 meet this past weekend at North Point High School.
Bristol will compete in the 400-meter dash at the Class 4, Sectional 2 meet this weekend at Mexico High School.
Q: What sports have you played in high school?
I’ve done track for three years, cross country for three years and soccer for one year. I didn’t have a freshman year of track due to COVID.
Q: Was there an adjustment to high school track?
It’s a lot more competitive in high school than it is in middle school for sure. It’s a lot more serious. Middle school’s definitely more for fun than actual competition.
Q: Have you stuck to the same track events in high school?
Usually, I’ve only run the 200 and the 4x200. And then this year I picked up anchoring the 4x100. And then very recently, I’ve run three 400 meter dashes. My most recent one is 11th in the state. I randomly just started being good at the 400.
Q: Was it a big accomplishment to place first in the 400-meter dash at the GAC North meet?
I was ranked sixth. I didn’t even expect to get first. I knew I ran faster than usual. But when I came around the corner and I was in first and didn’t see anyone around me, I was like what? I’m in first right now?
Q: What have you enjoyed most about competing on the various sports teams at Warrenton?
All of it. The feeling of accomplishing things you didn’t think you could do. Like in the 400, I never thought I’d be running a 50-something and I did. Or first place medals. Any kind of randomly large accomplishments are the best feelings. When you randomly PR (Personal Record) by a lot for no reason.
Q: When did you see your biggest improvement?
Definitely was this year. My sophomore and my junior year, speed-wise, I got a little faster but it wasn’t a lot faster. And then from my junior to my senior year, there was a big gap between those years.
Q: What is your focus when running a race?
Most of the time, I’m trying to race the clock more than I’m racing the person. If the time’s faster, you’re ranked higher. But definitely having a guy on your outside pushing you to win is something that’s motivating.
Q: What are your future plans?
I don’t know for sure yet. I have two free years at St. Charles Community College. It’s probably what I’m going to do. I’m going to maybe run on the track team there.
What is your favorite food?
Every lunch break from Wal-Mart I get an eight piece boneless chicken wings with a side of macaroni. I don’t know my favorite food but it’s the one I eat most often.
