Liberty Christian Academy senior Andreanna Scheltens is ready to lead the Lady Eagles on the volleyball court this season.
Originally from Indiana, Scheltens moved to the area about four years ago when her father got a job in O’Fallon as a pastor. She is about to enter her second year as a student at Liberty Christian.
Scheltens played on all three girls state championship teams at Liberty Christian last year as a junior. Scheltens was a member of the volleyball, soccer and basketball state championship teams.
Q: How long have you played volleyball?
A: “I've played volleyball since fourth grade. I went to another small school and they started it really early.”
Q: Is volleyball a sport you knew you wanted to try?
A: “My older sister did it and she loved it. And so we always played at home and so I just started it and so I was like, I love this. It's so much fun. So I started in fourth grade and it was a great way to meet new friends and stuff, especially when you move to a new school.”
Q: Do you have a specific position you're staying at or do you move around on the volleyball court?
A: “I help with back row but I'm a right side for the most part for hitting.”
Q: What was it like to be a part of last year’s state championship team?
A: “It was super exciting for me because previously my freshman and sophomore year, I was at Holt and if you don't know, they don't have a great track record when it comes to volleyball. I think we won like two games. And so I went from going over there to like losing every game. Super disheartening. I came here and we like won every game and the team was just so much more uplifting and fun. And so being able to win and continuously win and getting a ton of playing time was literally awesome for me.”
Q: Do you anticipate taking on more of a leadership role this season?
A: “I'm hoping I can be a role model for them as they're coming in and just teaching them new stuff. Starting a new sport can be super scary. You know what I mean? Especially the fear of failing.. So when younger kids do come in, they'll feel like, yeah, I'm not good at this now, but I will be one day.”
Q: Is there a certain part of your game you think has improved the most?
A: “I definitely think my hitting has improved a lot since last year. We just started on the left side and I'm like, oh, I'm actually hitting these in. That's really great. Last year was a little less consistent. I think it's improved but, I don't know, I'm excited about it. I was like, the other day we started hitting and I was like, oh, I can hit over here. That's amazing. So, I definitely think my hitting has improved.”
