The East Elementary School four room addition’s substantial completion date is slated for next week after the district received the necessary panel to resume work on the project.
Bond Architects Architectural Associate Breanna Kolk confirmed at last week’s Wright City R-II Board of Education meeting that the panel arrived and was installed. She said substantial completion for the four room addition is slated for Nov. 27.
“They’ve got the HVAC system running,” Kolk said last week. “I was actually out there today. They’ve got flooring down. The wall base is down. It’s looking almost finished. They’re just putting on the final touches.”
At last week’s meeting, the board approved over $8,600 in change orders for the project.
The change order was for overhead wire pulls, which added a cost of just over $5,000, change from four inch to six inch Concrete Masonry Unit, which added a cost of over $1,800 and floor transition grinding, which added a cost of over $1,700.
Kolk said the drawings listed four inch concrete block walls but the contractor said they need them to be six inches thick, leading to the change order for an increase to six inch concrete block walls. She said the addition for the floor transition grinding was necessary after they took out the door when connecting the addition to the current building.
“We connected the addition to the existing building and they took out the door,” Kolk said. “And the flooring underneath that door was pretty not good looking. So they grinded down that concrete and got it as close as they could to match the existing in the new concrete there.”
After the change order, the total cost for the project was about $2.057 million, an increase of about 3.3 percent over the original contract sum of $1.989 million. Wright City R-II Superintendent Dr. Chris Berger characterized the increase of about 3 percent as “pretty acceptable.”
“You’re always looking to try to stand to the original contract sum,” Berger said. “I’ll tell you, it’s rare … So 3 percent is pretty acceptable. At least in the projects I’ve been involved with. I’ve had some that have been a lot more than that.”
When completed, the four room addition will be utilized for four kindergarten rooms. The current kindergarten rooms will be utilized for art, music and two rooms for interventionists, who are currently using open spaces at East Elementary, such as the cafeteria and the meetings room.
