Wright City track puts focus on strengths

Posted

As the season enters its second half, areas of excellence are starting to become revealed.Coach Sue Wright is getting a clearer view of where each of her athletes can best succeed and has begun focusing attention in those areas.“Some of the kids are in multiple events, but we want to start devoting more time to the events they have a chance of advancing to sectionals or districts in,” said Wright.Several of those competitors are newcomers, getting a taste of track and field for the first time — and they are enjoying immediate success. Such was the case again during Orchard Farm Invitational on FridaySenior Ty Davis toyed with the idea of participating in track last season but didn’t pursue the thought until this spring.“He’s been a great addition to our team,” said Wright.Davis is finding his niche in the high jump, during which he finished third on Friday, clearing 5 feet, 8 inches.“We’re totally focused on the high jump now,” said Wright. “I don’t think he’s going to have any problem going over 6 feet.”In the long jump, Davis covered a distance of 17 feet, 10.5 inches to place sixth. It was also another successful day for freshman Danielle Dyer, who continued to excel in the sprint events. She has found her stride in the 200-meter race, during which she placed second in 28.6 seconds.“That is definitely her best event,” said Wright. “She’s got that quick speed and is also strong.”Dyer hasn’t been quite as competitive in the 100-meter races, finishing seventh.“She’s competing against juniors and seniors, so that’s a real challenge,” said Wright. The Wildcats are also pulling in significant points from the throwing events, thanks to a pair of upperclassmen.Senior Christian Thompson and junior Kyle Christopher have found their talent in separate events.Thompson has been especially successful in the shot put, winning with a toss of 44 feet, 2 inches at Orchard Farm.Meanwhile, Christopher took third in the discus throw with a top distance of 125 feet, 10 inches. Thompson placed fourth at 116 feet, 9 inches.“They’re improving every time, and that’s really nice,” said Wright. “Christian throwing that 47 is awesome. Kyle has been consistently immproving in the discus in every meet.”There was also a pair of top finishers in the distance events for the Wildcats on Friday.Junior Jynna Fritz placed second in the mile run with a 5:55, while taking third in the two-mile race at 2:43.“Her times are coming down, which is really important,” said Wright. “There were some big schools there, and she did well.”Also performing well on Friday was sophomore Erin Tomschin, who placed third in the two-mile run with a 13:29.Perhaps the biggest surprise for Wright City was the emergence of freshman Adrianna Jefferson, who placed third in the discus throw at 92 feet, five inches. She also placed sixth in the shot put, clearing 27 feet, 3 inches.“She has really come around,” said Wright. “She has the technique down and is fine-tuning it.”As a team, Wright City placed sixth on the girls side and third among the boys field.DAVIS EXCELS IN HIGH JUMPDerrick Forsythe photo.
