The Wright City Lady Wildcats used an 18-run second inning to rout Eastern Missouri Conference foe Van-Far Tuesday night.
Wright City (9-10, 3-5 EMO) beat Van-Far 22-1 in their home finale. The Lady Wildcats claimed a 4-0 lead after one inning. After Van-Far scored one run in the top of the second inning, Wright City responded with 18 runs to take a 22-1 lead.
“We were very selective hitting,” Wright City softball coach Fred Ross said. “The pitcher wasn’t very fast. When she threw strikes, we hit them and we didn’t do too much with it. (We) went with the pitches. So I was pretty happy with the approach.”
Wright City opened the scoring two batters into the bottom of the first inning. After Paige Rees led off the game with a walk, Lydia Clubb hit an inside the park home run. Sophia Wegrzyn and Sadie Sehnert scored later in the inning on Ava Swaringen’s bases loaded single with one out in the inning.
Eight Wright City batters knocked in at least one run in their 18-run second inning. Rees and Clubb each had three RBIs. Swaringen and Hailey Swor each had two RBIs.
Swaringen earned the win on the mound for Wright City. She pitched all three innings and allowed one earned run. She struck out one Van-Far batter in the win.
“She went back-to-back for the first time and went six innings last night,” Ross said. “So pleased she threw strikes tonight. Only one walk. I mean, it was only three innings but she threw strikes and we played good defense.”
Wright City is slated to participate in the FCNB Rolla Softball Tournament this weekend. They will conclude their regular season slate with a game at Owensville Oct. 9. The district tournament is slated to begin Oct. 12.
