Wright City High School receives national certification

Two years after introducing the innovative Project Lead the Way program, the Wright City R-II School District can call itself official.Following a recent site visit evaluation, the high school’s engineering program received national certification. As part of the process, Principal Shawn Brown and a committee composed of teachers, staff, students and community members, submitted a self-assessment of the school’s implementation of Project Lead the Way.“This was an exhausted look at how we recruit and retain students and what the facilities look like,” said Brown. “We’ve seen how Project Lead the Way inspires students to think critically and problem solve and are extremely proud to be Project Lead the Way certified.”The engineering program, which began at Wright City during the 2014-15 school year, will not have to seek certification again for another five years.Brown says the district is hoping to expand its Project Lead the Way course offerings by starting a computer science portion as well.“It’s worthwhile for our kids, because it’s giving them those 21st century skills they weren’t able to obtain before,” said Brown. “It’s opening doors for kids at Wright City that they’ve never had in the past.”With several students opting to pursue engineering as a postsecondary study at Missouri S&T University, Brown believes the direct results of Project Lead the Way and instructor Amy Geurin are being seen.“That’s something we’re really excited about — is giving students the skills to go on and be successful at the next level,” said Brown. The lab used for Project Lead the Way courses at Wright City was recently renovated. In addition, Brown says the school is encouraging more local businesses to partner with the program to provide internships.
