Wright City boys land two on All-EMO team following improved season

Following its most accomplished season in nearly a decade, the Wright City boys basketball team was rewarded with a pair of spots on the Eastern Missouri All-Conference team.In other years, the Wildcats’ numbers may have yielded additional selections, but the EMO was particularly successful as a league this winter. Two representatives, Bowling Green and Community R-VI won district titles and claimed the majority of the roster positions.Wright City saw two seniors cap off their careers in top fashion, with one taking first-team honors and the other landing on the second team.Ty Davis — Senior was a three-year starter for the Wildcats, making a considerable impact this season. He averaged 19.5 points per game, netting a team-best 331 points and knocking down 23 three-pointers.“Ty was a very unselfish player and was very generous with his time,” said Coach Rick Halteman. “He would take time to help out his teammates and did everything we asked. He was a scorer, but he was also a facilitator for you.”Davis made 70 percent of his free-throw attempts, establishing himself as both a slasher and outside shooter. He scored a season-high 36 points against Elsberry in December.“He could score from about any way he wanted,” said Halteman. “His length and arm span helped him cover a lot of space on defense, making it difficult for most teams. And his ability to jump helped him get to the rim.”Bret Noble — Senior had a tremendous breakout season after nearly not becoming a part of the team.Following a slow start in December, Noble elevated his numbers with a tremendous January stretch during which he averaged 20-plus points over seven straight games.“He just had such a passion for the game and played with a lot more intensity than in the past,” said Halteman. “You could tell how badly he wanted to win.”He finished the season averaging 16.3 points, having drained a team-best 57 three-pointers.“Bret was one of the best shooters in the conference,” said Halteman. “He had great range and could knock it down from just about anywhere. I also think Bret is a better defender than he gets credit for.”Davis and Noble are two of the Wildcats’ seven seniors from a team that finished 13-13.“I would have liked to have gotten Christian Thompson on the team as well,” added Halteman. “But with us going 5-5 in a conference where Bowling Green and Community R-VI had really strong seasons, I think that probably hurt us a little bit.”ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONSDerrick Forsythe photo.
