Trailing by a pair of runs heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wright City baseball team finally found the hitting prowess that had existed consistently all season.Batting though the entire lineup, the Wildcats regained the lead during that stretch en route to a 10-5 victory over Principia in the Class 3 District 6 semifinal game.“I liked how we didn’t panic when we got down in the game,” said Coach Shannon Wells. “We knew our pitching was going to be solid.”Principia presented a threat early, opening with three consecutive hits, including a single, to punch through two early runs. The Wildcats countered with a pair of doubles by juniors Chase Jones and Donovan Mozee in the bottom of the first inning, with each eventually scoring.Wright City starting pitcher Devin Telkamp began to settle down, only allowing three more runs — all in the third inning.“He struggled a little bit early, and left some pitches up a bit that they hit, but he settled down and got outs,” said Wells. “Once he started getting the lead-off batters out, things worked a lot easier for us.”With its playoff run in danger, the Wildcats started rattling the bats in the fourth, connecting on six singles, including four straight. Troy Muse, Alec Lampharter, Tyler Brittain, Devin Telkamp and Jones each scored, with three of those runs coming with two outs.“I thought we would get our bats going eventually,” said Wells. “They’ve been pretty solid, and it just takes time.”Principia left two runners stranded in the sixth inning, but any hopes the Indians had of a rally was deflated when Mozee and Kyle Tuepker unloaded consecutive home runs in the bottom of the frame.“They had nothing to lose at the lower seed, so they could play as loose as they wanted,” said Wells. “We were expected to win, and sometimes you have to spark your team.”Mozee’s deep shot was perhaps more memorable, but Wells says there was more to his contributions.“He had two big hits, actually,” said Wells. “The home run was great, but he had an important base hit too.”The celebration was limited for Wright City, which has its sights set on winning a district title. The Wildcats were scheduled to battle Lutheran South in the championship game on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.WILDCATS ADVANCE TO TITLE GAMEDerrick Forsythe photo.
