Warrenton to host Class 3 quarterfinal on Saturday

Area basketball fans will have an opportunity to witness the sport at an elite level this Saturday, as Warrenton High School hosts a Class 3 quarterfinal matchup. The boys contest will begin at 1 p.m., with the girls game to follow at 3 p.m.The winners will advance to the state semifinal at Mizzou Arena the following Thursday.Warrenton will be making its debut as a playoff host, with many of the quarterfinals held on college campuses.“It’s the first opportunity for us to host an event of this kind,” said Warrenton Activities Director Bobby Spoonster. “We want to show off our facilities and what we have to offer. We’re always trying to improve and hopefully this will provide us the chance to host  high-level events like this in the future.”While the exact matchup was not determined by press time, there are several intriguing storylines. The boys game will feature either College Preparatory (16-11) or Duchesne (19-10) versus Bowling Green (25-3) or Father Tolton (25-2).Duchesne is a former GAC opponent for Warrenton, and Warriors baseball coach Eric Burle is an assistant for the Pioneers.Meanwhile, College Preparatory is attempting to make it back to Columbia after a fourth-place finish last season.“From a fan draw aspect, if you have Bowling Green, Duchesne or Macon (girls), those schools are notorious for traveling well,” said Spoonster. “Bowling Green and Macon will shut down their towns to come support their teams.”On the opposite side, Father Tolton boasts one of the most highly touted players in the state. Michael Porter is considered by ESPN recruiting services to be the No. 2 sophomore in the nation and No. 2 overall player in the state behind Jayson Tatum of Chaminade. The 6-foot-8 small forward has drawn a following for his unique athletic ability and dunks.Father Tolton reached the Class 2 quarterfinals last season, before making the jump to Class 3. The Trailblazers’ only losses this season have been to Class 4 Helias and Class 5 Vianney.“It would also be neat to have a player like Michael Porter Jr. here and be able to say you had a future NBA lottery pick play in your gym,” said Spoonster. “There’s a likelihood you’re going to have a lot of people come out to watch a player of that caliber.”Bowling Green is led by sophomore point guard Tyess Chatman and is reinforced underneath by senior Adam Holt.On the girls side, the matchup will feature either Cardinal Ritter (21-4) or Duchesne (22-8) against Macon (22-5) or Southern Boone (16-11).The most local thread in this game would be Duchesne, which was a common opponent for both Warrenton and Wright City. The Pioneers defeated the Warriors 42-30 in the championship game of the Warrenton Tournament and eliminated the Wildcats from the first round of districts in a 61-13 rout. The exact matchup for Saturday’s quarterfinal will be determined by the sectional matchups on Wednesday.WARRENTON TO HOST PLAYOFFGoogle images.
