Warrenton softball explodes for victory over St. Louis Patriots

Posted

It took a few innings, but the Warrenton softball team warmed up and worked its way to a victory.

Playing the St. Louis Patriots homeschool team at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex (BMAC), the Warriors racked up 10 third-inning runs on the way to the 10-0, five-inning victory.

Warriors Coach Chad Berrey said the game was one of adjustments.

“We had a slow start to the game as the girls took a time through the lineup to adjust their timing to the pitching we saw tonight,” Berrey said. “We scored all 10 runs with two outs. I love seeing the girls keep their heads on straight and make adjustments at the plate.”

Warrenton (6-5) got multi-RBI games from Paige Campbell (three), Brooklyn Young and Makenzie Phillips (two each).

Campbell, as it turned out, was a home run short of the cycle with a single, double and triple.

Hannah Gibson threw the complete-game five-hitter, striking out eight and walking none.

“Hannah was magnificent once again in the circle,” Berrey said. “She got ahead in counts and kept hitters off balance throughout the game. Defensively, we were solid. I thought our freshman outfielder, Carsyn DeGraaf, shined tonight and made a couple of very nice plays.”

ST LOUIS UNITED BOYS SOCCER 3, WRIGHT CITY 1 – It was a tie game at the half, but the Wright City boys’ soccer team saw the game slip away in the second half.

In a game played at BMAC, Benji Rodriguez tallied a first-half goal, which Andrew Staats set up, but the Wildcats (2-5) couldn’t hang on to the good momentum.

Wright City Coach Tori Harris said that the final third of the field proved to be the team’s undoing in the loss.

“The boys played well,” Harris said. “We were connecting passes and creating chances at goal. We had a hard time finishing the ball. I feel the final score doesn't reflect how the game went or how the team played. It’s definitely not the result we wanted, but I am very pleased with the effort they gave tonight.”

Wright City next plays host to Fulton at 4:30 p.m. today.

TODAY’S ACTION – The Liberty Christian volleyball teams will play host to Veritas Christian, with junior varsity beginning at 4:30 p.m. and varsity taking place immediately after.

Three Wright City teams will hit their respective fields today as the softball team begins play at the Fort Zumwalt East Tournament at 3 p.m., while the golf team competes in the Versailles Tournament and the soccer team hosts Fulton at 4:30 p.m.

Warrenton will have two teams playing today, as the golf team takes on Fort Zumwalt East at 3:30 p.m. while the volleyball team is at Winfield, with varsity beginning at 5:15 p.m.
