Through the ups and a lot of downs of the past couple of seasons, only one thing has remained true for the Warrenton softball team.
The Warren County rivalry with its neighbors from Wright City has produced plenty of feelings for the Warriors, along with plenty of positive results.
Warrenton went to Wright City on Friday and won its 10th straight over Wright City – by an 8-1 score this time.
Sophomore Brook Baxter spoke after the win about the importance of strong starts for Warrenton – from the first game to the first inning Friday, in which Warrenton scored a pair of runs before Wright City picked up a bat.
“It always feels good to win, but beating Wright City, especially by that much, is even better,” Baxter said. “I feel like this year everyone seems more relaxed and winning the first game of the season (over Jefferson City) helped with confidence and boosted our morale.”
Once staked to the lead, Warrenton added runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to roll to victory.
The team was further aided by eight fielding errors committed by the Wildcats (3-3) in the defeat.
Warrenton Coach Chad Berrey praised his team for playing at the level he has come to expect from this talented roster.
“I think, first of all, we have a lot of gamers on this team this year,” Berrey said. “They thrive in pressure situations, they rise up for special occasions, and they were really excited to play our county rivals.”
Berrey said he was excited to see the team’s offense clicking like it did, especially after taking an early lead against Warrenton last season before having to win in extra innings.
“Our coaching staff and I have the utmost respect for Coach Ross of Wright City, so scoring early and consistently throughout the entire game was great,” Berrey said. “We wanted to keep our foot on the gas the entire time, because we know Coach Ross and his team could flip the script at any time. Last year, we took a lead, and Wright City clawed their way back. So we wanted to keep pushing the entire game until the last out.”
This time around, Brooklyn Young and Brylen Shoults went three-for-five at the plate. Young had a pair of doubles and scored twice. Shoults had a double and scored once.
Baxter also went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
“We are playing really well together as a team,” Shoults said. “Everyone is talking and continuing to cheer each other on. I can’t wait to see how the season continues as we keep growing together as a team."
Berrey also complemented his battery, as Shoults had a strong game behind the plate and Young made some personal history in the circle.
She allowed just one run on five hits while walking and striking out five.
“It was the first complete game of her high school career,” Berrey said. “Brylen caught a great game behind the dish, zero passed balls. With a backstop as big as Wright City's, this was huge for our team’s success. She was a wall tonight.”
The teams won’t have to wait long to see one another as they will renew acquaintances tomorrow (Friday) at Warrenton. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.
