Warrenton’s returning varsity golfers took major strides at Monday’s district golf meet.
Warrenton competed at the Class 4, District 2 meet Monday at Golf Club of Wentzville. The Warriors were led by junior Owen Thompson, who finished the 18-hole round tied for 41st place. He shot an 87. Thompson improved his score by eight strokes from last year’s district meet, which was also played at the Golf Club of Wentzville.
“That’s a tremendous improvement over last year,” Warrenton boys golf coach Aaron Jinkerson said. “That trend for next year looks pretty good as well where he could be next year as a qualifier.”
Troy Anderson finished second among all Warrenton golfers with a 90 in his first season on the varsity golf squad. The junior was an all-conference golfer this season after playing baseball as a freshman and sophomore.
“This is a pretty intense environment for this setting,” Jinkerson said. “I was pretty happy with that.”
Senior Maison Rader shot a 93, a 12-shot improvement over last season. Ethan Leavitt shot a 96 and Ethan King shot a 101. The cutline to qualify for state was a 78 round.
Jinkerson said Rader and Thompson benefited from competing in the district meet for the third year. Jinkerson thinks the experience helped with the returning varsity golfers’ comfort level of competing in districts.
“The more you do it, the better you’re going to feel when you play,” Jinkerson said. “And next year when Troy’s back and Ethan Leavitt’s back, they’ll hopefully recall some thoughts they had today and try to correct those errors.”
Jinkerson thinks the varsity team improved tremendously over the course of the season. Anderson, Thompson and Leavitt all earned all-conference honors. The Warriors finished the season with four conference dual meet wins despite losing GAC North Golfer of the Year Gabe Frederick and state qualifier Bryce Goulette from last year’s team.
“I saw the ability to learn from their mistakes and try to bounce back from lessons learned from previous matches or tournaments,” Jinkerson said. “I did feel like overall as a varsity squad, we improved tremendously this year.”
