It’s only midway through the season, and the Warrenton tracks teams appear to be in postseason form. The boys team posted another finish to claim first place, and the girls team claimed second at the Wright City Invitational last Thursday.“We had another strong performance,” said Coach Steve McDowell, whose team edged O’Fallon Christian for a second week, this time by less than a point.“We’ve battled them very nicely in the last two meets that we’ve seen them,” said McDowell. “We were fortunate to come away with a victory on Thursday night.”It took a surging victory one of the final events, the 1,600-meter relay, as anchor Brian Sanders gave the Warriors the advantage in the final few strides. The senior, along with juniors Jacob Crump and Tyler Miller and freshman Dylan Chandler, ran a 3:38 to secure the victory.Warrenton scored 117.83 points to Christian’s 117.It was one of three first-place finishes for the Warriors.Senior Caleb Hodgson claimed top honors in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 6 inches. The same relay crew that won the 1,600-meter race placed second in the 3,200-meter relay.Crump was also successful on an individual level, winning the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.84 seconds. He finished second in the 110-meter race, recording a new personal best at 17.44 seconds.“Jacob is doing a really nice job for us in both the hurdle events and in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays,” said McDowell. “He’s having an outstanding year so far.”McDowell adds that Crump’s goal is to eclipse Nick Wallace’s 300-meter record. Also claiming first place last Thursday was senior Jordon Washington, who won the 100-meter race in 11.03 seconds. He took a rare second in the 200-meter dash, clocking a 22.59-second finish.Junior Justin McBroom continued to provide points in the long jump, clearing 19 feet, 1.5 inches.Meanwhile, sophomore Paul Lanigan continued to improve his distance in the triple jump, recording a top jump of 38 feet, 6.5 inches. The trio of Washington, McBroom and Lanigan also contributed in the relays, joining junior Braydan Chmiel to place second in the 400-meter relay in 45.3 seconds. The Warriors 800-meter relay team, consisting of Washington, Chmiel, Crump and Lanigan, finished first with a time of 1:33.Perhaps one of the most progressive showings was by sophomore Ruben Varnado, who took third in the discus throw with a heave of 111 feet, 3 inches.Additionally, junior James Goetz shaved 19 seconds off his two-mile time, running an 11:15 to place fifth.“We’re getting points from all over right now,” said McDowell. “I’m really pleased with where we’re at so far this season.”HODGSON WINS POLE VAULTDerrick Forsythe photo.
