The Warrenton boys basketball team is looking to return to the win column following two lopsided defeats last week to St. Charles and Winfield.
The Warriors, who are playing in the Union Tournament this week, are now 1-7 on the season.
In Friday’s home game against Winfield, Warrenton trailed 20-13 in the opening quarter and was outscored in every quarter in a 67-37 setback. As a team, the Warriors shot 31% from the field and made only two of 16 attempts (13%) from long range. Joe Goldsmith led the squad with 14 points, followed by Andrew Cox with 10 points.
Three nights earlier, the Warriors had another poor shooting night, connecting on only 19% of their field goal attempts in a 68-29 loss at St. Charles. They fell behind 18-5 in the first quarter and were down 35-13 at halftime. Goldsmith had a team-best 14 points. Kolby Meine and Chase Cook followed with eight and seven points, respectively.
Riley Shive won four of five matches and placed second at 285 pounds Saturday to lead Wright City.
As a team, the Wildcats placed 11th in the 12-team field. David Riggs was the next highest finisher for Wright City with a fifth-place medal at 120 pounds. Two others, Kaylob Stufflebean and Kyle Horneker, placed sixth at 160 and 220, respectively.
Warrenton won both of its matches with wins over Wright City (60-18) and (Christian (60-6) last Wednesday.
In the Warrenton-Wright City match, only two matches were contested as the rest were decided by forfeit. At 160 pounds, Wright City’s Kaylob Stufflebean won by pinfall over Warrenton’s Peyton Nelson. Josh Napier of Warrenton won by pinfall over Riley Shive at 285.
In the Warrenton-Christian match, Anthony Lombardo, Andrew Sommer and Napier won three of the four contested matches for the Warriors.
