Warrenton aldermen approved a cost-sharing agreement with Game 7 Baseball Inc. to add turf to the four softball fields at the Warrenton Athletic Complex.
Game 7 is an organization that operates baseball and softball tournaments in Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee and Kentucky. Its website shows that three events were scheduled in Missouri in September, with one in O’Fallon and two in St. Charles County.
The decision was made during the Sept. 5 meeting.
“They approached us about being able to do some tournaments,” Mayor Eric Schlueter said during the meeting in response to a question from Alderman Roger Romaker.
“They’ll have tournaments out there every weekend,” City Administrator Brandie Walters said during the meeting.
The cost of the project is estimated to be about $1 million, according to the agreement. The city and Game 7 have both agreed to pay roughly $500,000 of the cost.
“So this is pretty much the only way we’re going to get turf fields, correct?” Romaker asked.
“Oh yeah,” Schleuter responded.
The agreement states that the current playing surfaces will be removed and replaced with artificial turf and repair or replace all drainage systems associated with the fields.
The city also agreed to allow Game 7 to have weekend softball and baseball tournaments and one weeknight of league games. Game 7 will be able to use the fields for 10 years without paying the normal costs required by the city.
The agreement states that excavation work will be completed by Nov. 1 and that the new turf will be in place before Feb. 15, 2024. If the full project is not complete by Sept. 1, 2024, the city agreed to pay $1,000 per day to Game 7 for the delay.
Walters said Game 7 will use the fields for weekend tournaments and that they’ve reached an agreement with TSM, who currently runs leagues at the facility, to use the fields one day a week.
The board approved the decision by a vote of 4-0. Aldermen President Jack Crump and Steven Cullom were absent.
