For the first time since 1921, a Huneke is not at the helm of the Community News newspapers.
Bob Huneke, who bought the paper from his father in the 1990s, sold it in early October to Tim Schmidt and his company, Westplex Media Group.
Westplex Media Group is also the home of the Warren County Record, Montgomery Standard and Mexico Ledger.
Community News is the longest running weekly newspaper in the St. Louis region and is published every Wednesday.
“I am excited about the opportunity to expand our footprint down the I-70 corridor,” Schmidt said. “Community News has a long history of serving readers in St. Charles and St. Louis counties. The Huneke’s have published a great newspaper for many years and I appreciate that they have chosen me to be the next steward of the paper.”
The Community News currently publishes two editions, one for North St. Louis County and another dedicated to St. Charles County. The newspaper is a free publication and is distributed at a number of retail establishments in the region, including at 32 Schnucks and Dierbergs grocery stores.
One adjustment loyal readers will notice is the inclusion of high school sports and obituaries. A redesigned website will be unveiled this month at mycnews.com.
The Community News began weekly publication in 1921 by Huneke’s grandfather in the city of St. Louis.
Huneke said he has been looking for new ownership to take the Community News into the future. In recent years, Huneke’s wife, Donna, has suffered from the late stages of Alzheimer. Now they will be able to spend more time together.
He admits he will be cheering from the sidelines.
“There is a place for local news and Tim has the knowledge and experience to make this a highly-successful paper,” he said. “I think the market for (local news) will continue to increase. I can’t wait to see what happens.”
Also this week, Schmidt announced the sale of the Moberly Monitor-Index, a weekly newspaper, to CherryRoad Media Inc. The transaction was effective Oct. 31. The new owner operates over 80 newspapers in 17 states, including nine in Missouri.
Westplex Media had owned the Monitor-Index for the past two years, after acquiring it from Gannett, the nation’s largest newspaper chain, in 2021.
