Work to add turf to four baseball fields at the Warrenton Athletic Complex is ahead of schedule, the city’s director of operations said during the Dec. 19 board of aldermen meeting.
“It’s amazing the amount of work that they got done,” John Struckhoff said. “It’s going very well as of right now because of the great weather we’ve had.”
Crews have graded and laid gravel on all four infields in preparation for turf to be laid next year.
In September, Warrenton aldermen approved a cost-sharing agreement with Game 7 Baseball Inc. to add turf to field A, B, C, and D.
The project cost is estimated to be about $1 million. The city is covering half the cost, with Game 7 covering the remainder.
The approved agreement requires the new turf to be in place before Feb. 15.
Crews will also address drainage issues in the outfields of the four fields, but that work has not yet begun, Struckhoff said.
“It’s going to be a busy summer for sure,” Mayor Eric Schlueter said during the meeting.
During Struckhoff’s report at the Dec. 19 meeting, Alderman Roger Romaker asked if there had been any progress made toward improving the handicapped parking at the athletic complex.
“We went to one of our engineering firms and they’re working on a proposal for us to see what we can do,” Struckhoff said. “It looks like it’s going to have to be a phased project. But yes, we are looking into it.”
Struckhoff emphasized that any changes to the handicapped parking are separate from the turf project.
During the Oct. 17 board of aldermen meeting, Warrenton resident Miriam Schaefer asked aldermen to address the handicapped parking situation.
“There are so many elderly people that I’m friends with or friends that have grandparents or parents who do not attend sports events who want to go and they’re unable to get to the games,” Schaefer said at that meeting. “Something needs to be done.”
