Trump and the truth

The banner headline on Page A5 of Sunday’s St. Louis daily said: “Trump Blasts Media Over Crowd Figures.” The story was written by two Washington Post reporters. The day after his inauguration, President Donald Trump spoke at the Central Intelligence Agency, complimenting it on its work, but he also blasted the press, which he does regularly. He called the press dishonest and said it lied about the size of the crowd at his inauguration. Trump said about l million people attended. The president said the television networks showed an empty field and claimed about 250,000 attended. The Post writers said the crowd did not extend all the way back to the Washington monument, as the president claimed, and that when President Barack Obama was inaugurated the crowd extended that far and photos show clearly that Obama’s crowd was larger than Trump’s.It was OK to print a brief story on this but to devote a half page to the crowds and about what he said at the CIA was a bit of a stretch. There were photos showing the crowds, which proved the press reports. We all know by now that President Trump likes to exaggerate. We also know that the press seeks the truth. This president will never warm to the press, which will keep pointing out the truth. The thinking people will agree that we are fortunate to have a free press, especially to watch over President Trump’s claims. The Obama and Hillary people still haven’t gotten over the latter’s defeat, and will continue to blast the new president whenever possible. We’re going to have four years of this.
