Truesdale city officials say they hope for new improvements in Bruer Park to begin construction by May. Improvements will include a new playground, basketball half court, walkways, parking lot repaving, fencing and new greenery planting.
Truesdale Mayor Chris Watson said city leaders are looking forward to providing new park amenities that families can come out and enjoy as soon as this fall. The city is accepting contractor bids for the work until March 19.
City officials said they prefer not to comment on the current projected cost of the project before bids are submitted. Truesdale will be reimbursed for half the cost of the project through a 50/50 cost-share grant from the federal land and water conservation fund, administered by Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
City officials hope to select a contractor by March 24, but the project probably won’t be able to proceed until late April or early May, said City Administrator MaryLou Rainwater.
“Once we open the bids (and) the board of aldermen approves somebody, that information needs to be sent to the Department of Natural Resources so they can give final approval before starting. That all takes time,” Rainwater explained.
Once construction begins, the contractor will have 120 days to complete the project.
Mayor Watson said the city wants to see the project completed before the first weekend of October, when Truesdale plans to hold its annual Railroad Days festival. The current timeline makes that very possible, but doesn’t leave much room for significant delays or extension for things like bad weather.
The park improvements are a separate project from the current construction of a new community center and storm shelter at Bruer Park. Watson said the city wanted the community center construction to be well underway before starting additional work in the rest of the park.
The community center is being paid for by $1.6 million dollars from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s safe room program, as well as a $330,000 financing agreement with First State Community Bank.
