Three charged for giving toddler loaded gun

One adult is charged with child endangerment and two more are charged with neglect after the group allegedly allowed a one-year-old child to play with a loaded handgun in their presence.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Department began an investigation into the incident after being shown a video and photos of the child playing with the loaded gun, according to documents submitted to the Warren County Circuit Court. The incident reportedly happened on Jan. 21 at a home on South Street in Truesdale.

The video and photos allegedly show Trey Scott, 23, of Truesdale, place a loaded magazine into a firearm and then hand it to the toddler. Deputies said the video shows the child pointing the gun at adults, pulling the trigger without a round chambered, but also attempting to rack the gun and chamber a round.

Deputies allege they also viewed a photo in which the toddler was pointing the gun directly at Scott. The photo had been modified with the text “Lmao,” which is short for “laughing my a** off.”

Scott also reportedly admitted to the allegations while speaking with deputies. He was charged with first-degree child endangerment and arrested on Jan. 23, according to court records. Bond was set at $5,000 cash, which Scott paid to be released pending trial.

Two other adults, Jordan B. Carpenter, 22, and Abigail L. Fletcher, 20, both of rural Warren County, were also arrested on Jan. 23 and were charged with abuse or neglect of a child.

Deputies allege that the video and photos from the incident show Carpenter and Fletcher laughing, observing and/or interacting with the toddler as the child is playing with the loaded gun.

Both Carpenter and Fletcher were released from jail on $5,000 bonds pending trial.
