With a run in the top of the ninth inning, the South Division broke a tie and held on to defeat the North 7-6 in the Ninth District Junior Legion All-Star Game Saturday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon. The South Division included local players from Washington Post 218, Union Post 297, Rhineland Post 147 (Hermann) and Warrenton Post 122. Players from Daniel Boone, Central and the North Knights also were on the winning squad. The North played without St. Charles, which was competing at the state tournament. O'Fallon, Troy, Elsberry, St. Peters, Wentzville and West made up the team. "Before the game, we went over a couple of signs and asked them to be aggressive and have some fun," said South Manager Mike Gardner of Washington Post 218. "We played pretty well and were able to squeak out a come from behind victory." Using wood bats, the South outhit the North, 10-5. With the score tied 6-6 in the top of the ninth inning, Daniel Boone's Stephen Kelley walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Adam Hussey of the North Knights followed with an RBI single to give the South a 7-6 lead. Washington's Cody Coffman pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning for the save, allowing no hits, one walk and striking out two. Union's Tyler Thompson was awarded the win. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing no hits with one walk and one strikeout. "Tyler did a great job in the eighth inning," Union Manager Brad Johnson said. "He didn't get the call on two solid pitches on the outside corner, which led to the walk he allowed." Ethan Mohesky of Union Post 297 was the starting pitcher for the South. In two innings, he allowed two runs (both in the second inning) on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts. Washington's Cody Gardner pitched a perfect third inning for the South, forcing two ground balls and a fly ball to the three batters he faced. Warrenton's Jake Shough tossed a scoreless fourth inning, allowing only one runner to reach on an error. "He did a great job," said Warrenton Post 122 Coach Kevin Shough. "He only threw two balls the entire inning." Shough's inning resulted in two fly outs and a ground out. Hermann's Jackson Logan pitched the sixth inning. He allowed two runs on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Washington's Brendan Elbert worked the seventh inning. He allowed no runs on one hit with one strikeout. Another area starter for the South was Warrenton's Cody Cox. He played the first five inning in the outfield. Cox made it on base once and scored a run on a sacrifice bunt. Other area players who got into the game as reserves were Chad Berrey (designated hitter) and Nick Shough (shortstop). Berrey was 0-for-2. Shough, who played the eighth and ninth innings at shortstop, went 0-for-1. Both teams held the lead during the back-and-forth contest. Coach Shough was pleased with how the Post 122 players represented Warrenton. "They did a good job," said Shough. "They didn't have any flaws and seemed pretty comfortable being in a bigger game like that."
