Just weeks away from the Warren County Relay for Life, registration and early fundraising figures lag far behind the goals set this year. But organizers emphasize it’s not too late to get involved. The Relay for Life event will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 3, and conclude at 6 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at Black Hawk Middle School in Warrenton. The theme is “A Night Under the Stars.” As of Monday, 10 teams and 28 survivors have signed up. A goal for 25 teams and 100 surveyors has been set. Last year, 19 teams and 79 survivors participated. Organizers hope to raise $60,000 for this year’s event. So far, $9,931, or 17 percent toward the goal, has been raised. Last year, $56,060 was collected. In addition, organizers want to raise $2,500 in luminaries and $1,500 in sponsorships. Individuals or teams can register at www.relayforlife.org/warrencomo. “This is the moment” to sign up, co-chair Sara Creech said. “This is it. It’s not too late. Any amount of money or people helps.” Participants take part in the largest fundraising walk in the nation around the school’s track. A variety of activities are held throughout the evening and morning to bring awareness to the disease. Fredbird is scheduled to make an appearance on Friday evening, though his arrival won’t be until 11-11:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the Cardinals-Cubs game. A commitment of $100 must be made by registered participants or a team who collectively raises $100 per participant to receive a commemorative T-shirt this year. In the past, participants received a shirt to wear at the event for $10. Beyond the initial $100 commitment, participants will continue to receive the incentive gifts based on the level of fundraising achieved. “Everybody is excited,” Creech said. “We got a lot of great new things. We got a lot more participation this year.” One more pre-event meeting for participants will be held as teams and individuals are encouraged to turn in their fundraising money on Wednesday, June 1. The meeting will be held at First State Community Bank in Warrenton at 5:30 p.m. For more information on this year’s event, contact Creech at 636-338-4181, co-chair Mary Hase at 636-932-4883 or American Cancer Society staff member Katie Foster at 314-286-8183 or at katie.foster@cancer.org.
