R-III Schools and Holy Rosary renew sports partnership

Posted

The Warren County R-III School Board approved a cooperative agreement between the district and Holy Rosary to continue to allow Holy Rosary students to participate in sports as part of Black Hawk Middle School, if a sport is not offered at Holy Rosary.

The Warren County R-III board voted 6-0 to approve a cooperative agreement with Holy Rosary. The agreement allows Holy Rosary students in seventh and eighth grade to participate in sports with Black Hawk Middle School in basketball, cross country, football, cheerleading, softball, track, volleyball and wrestling if Holy Rosary is unable to field a team in the sport. The cooperative agreement adds basketball and volleyball to the other six sports, which were part of the agreement last year.

“Last year, we did run into a little bit of an issue where it didn’t look like Holy Rosary was going to be able to form a basketball team and they reached out to us to play,” Warren County R-III Superintendent Dr. Gregg Klinginsmith said. “We didn’t have that in our agreement. So we’ve decided to put all the sports on there.”

Klinginsmith said that Missouri State High School Athletics Association representatives indicated it is more efficient to structure the cooperative agreement with all potential sports listed. If Holy Rosary is able to field a team in a sport covered under the cooperative agreement, the Warren County R-III School District will send a letter to the MSHSAA to cancel the cooperative agreement for that sport.

Klinginsmith added there were positive reviews from the first year of the cooperative agreement.

“The sports that participated in that, the coaches reported it went very well,” Klinginsmith said. “So I’d recommend we continue to do that.”

Board member Sarah Janes, who voted against the cooperative agreement last year, voiced support for continuing with the cooperative agreement with Holy Rosary. She was happy to hear there were positive reports on the cooperative agreement last year. She also noted the benefits of the Black Hawk Middle School and Holy Rosary students participating on the same team in seventh and eighth grade, with many Holy Rosary students enrolling at Warrenton High School and participating in high school sports with students who are currently enrolled at Black Hawk Middle School.

“It’s awesome to be able to build up those programs and build those connections for the students that would not have those opportunities for something like cross country or something like softball or football which would need such a massive program,” Janes said.
