The Warren County R-III School Board announced its plans for the 2017 summer school session during the monthly meeting Feb. 9.The district decided to retain Catapult Learning as its provider with the Summer Journey program, which is a 20-day course.This year, summer school for R-III students will begin May 23 and conclude June 20.There will be some slight differences in the venue, as Daniel Boone Elementary will not be available to host classes due to the construction taking place as part of the district’s $10 million bond project, which recently broke ground.“There is quite a bit of renovating going on there, so we will have to disperse the students throughout the other buildings to accommodate that,” said Assistant Superintendent Jill Schowe.Future kindergarten through third-grade students will attend summer school at Warrior Ridge Elementary, while future fourth- through eight-grade students will go to Black Hawk Middle School.Those students will work on a combination of math, language arts and science in the mornings and take part in exploration classes in the afternoon.“We tried to include as many STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) courses in the afternoon as we could,” said Schowe.Students entering 10th through 12th grade at the high school will have the opportunity to take credit recovery classes. Incoming freshman can take up to one full credit of physical education during that 20-day period.“Enrollment packets will be coming out the second week of March, and hopefully we can have them all back by the middle of April so we can order supplies based on enrollment at that time,” said Schowe.The district doesn’t anticipate any students not getting into enrollment, but a waiting list will be available for any overflow and those students would be accommodated as spots open up.Summer School
