Lack of depth was a major concern for the Post 122 Legion teams at all levels this summer. And Freshman Coach Brian Vogt witnessed its impact in every area of the game during his team’s 8-14 campaign. The Freshmen compiled the best record of the three Post 122 teams, but it still wasn’t where Vogt initially saw his team finishing.“I expected to do a little better, but overall I thought the season was a pretty good success,” said Vogt. “My goals were to finish above .500 and make the playoffs.”Warrenton achieved one of those, qualifying for the district tournament where it exited after two straight losses.Post 122 opened the season with five straight losses, before defeating Elsberry. Another losing streak ensued before Warrenton rattled off four straight victories to end the season.“I expected to do a little better in some of those close games,” said Vogt. “Later in the season we were putting the ball in play better and cutting down on strikeouts.”Chris Garrett led the way with a .429 batting average, collecting 30 hits and scoring 20 runs.Behind him in the lead-off spot was Brendan Hazel, batting .388 with 26 hits and scoring 18 runs.“Garrett and Hazel were solid from day one,” said Vogt. “We started with Garrett as the lead off, but then moved Hazel up.”Splitting time between the AA team, Dalton Owenby contributed 11 hits and nine runs to the Freshmen as a .268 batter.Meanwhile, Alex Vogt batted .266 with 17 hits and 12 RBIs.But Vogt says he couldn’t rely on the latter half of his lineup for a guaranteed performance.“Our five through seven guys have got to get more consistent,” said Vogt. “When you’ve only got four guys hitting in the lineup, you’re basically giving two innings away.”Warrenton also received positive contribution from James Dotson, who double- rostered too.“A lot of it was about learning to hit those curve balls,” said Vogt. “Going from the one phase to the next.”Post 122’s pitching responsibility fell strongly upon three players, who each recorded over 20 innings.“At times our pitching looked good, but we’ve got to be deeper in the staff,” said Vogt. “We need to be five or six deep in our starting guys.”Garrett led the way with 28 innings of work, recording a 1.70 ERA while amassing a 2-3 record. He struck out 25 batters and walked 10.Owenby went 1-2, carrying a 2.85 ERA through 27 innings. His most astonishing figure was whiffing 24 batters and walking just three.Meanwhile, Hazel saw 22 innings on the mound, sporting a 2.86 ERA. He struck out 25 and walked 17 batters.“We just need a little more depth as a program,” said Vogt. “It’s hard to compete against much larger teams, so we’ve got to get more numbers out.”FRESHMAN LEGIONDerrick Forsythe Photo.
