Owensville halts Wright City comeback

Wright City Head Coach Ken Brown suggested music before games, or even a pre-game scrimmage instead.

“I’ve been trying a lot of things to get these guys going,” he said after his team’s 64-51 loss to Owensville Monday night.

Like most losses this season, the Wildcats started slowly and couldn’t recover in time.

Wright City (2-8) battled back from a 20-point second-half deficit to cut the Owensville lead to 53-45 with three minutes remaining, but couldn’t get enough stops in the final minutes.

Sophomore guard Devon Holmes led the team with 20 points and senior forward Ty Curtis finished with 12.

The already-thin Wildcats were without junior forward Dakota Phillips, who dislocated his finger in the double-overtime loss to Winfield in the Clopton Tournament Jan. 7.

Phillips was scheduled to meet with a doctor Tuesday to decide his season’s fate, but Brown was not optimistic.

“When it rains, it pours,” he said.

Without Phillips, the Wildcats struggled to contain Owensville forward Deandre Cox, who finished with 18 points.

Wright City figured out the Owensville matchup zone in the second half, and found open teammates on the baseline for easy buckets.

“I just think we ran out of gas down the stretch,” Brown said. “They’re a little more talented and have some good size down low.”

Wright City guards accounted for 43 of the team’s 51 points, and couldn’t handle the Owensville depth inside late in the game.

Owensville matched Wright City basket-for-basket on three straight possessions with  under four minutes to play, and knocked down enough free throws to seal the game.

“It’s so hard to keep a team from scoring for long stretches like that, but I’m really proud of our effort,” Brown said.

Brown will continue to tweak his pregame efforts in an attempt to get his players going early.

The Wildcats return to the court Thursday at home against Barat Academy at 7 p.m.

“If we can start the first half like we start the second half, we’ll be good to go,” Brown said.
