Emily Likes is an 18-year-old who just completed her senior year Warrenton High School.

As she prepares to start her freshman year at Ottawa University in Kansas, she reflected on how what she learned in high school will help her as she takes the next step in her life.

She earned multiple scholarships as her time in high school ended, and it was one of her classes that pointed her toward what she hopes will become her future career – being a chiropractor.

Q: What did you get the scholarship for?

“I got a staff scholarship. I’m playing volleyball in college and I got that scholarship.”

Q: What did you get the staff scholarship for?

“I wrote an essay on a class that influenced me. Sophomore year biology.”

Q: What was it about that class that stood out for you?

“The teacher and how she taught and it led me to what I’m going to be when I get out of high school.”

Q: What is it you want to do?

“Be a chiropractor.”

Q: How did the class help you figure that out?

“At first I wanted to not be in the medical field at all and then I realized I liked the biology side of things and I talked to her about what I could do after high school and she led me into that path.”

Q: What made you want to be a chiropractor?

“My family has really bad back issues so I always grew up going to the chiropractor and I thought it was so cool what they did and I feel like there will always be a need for them.”

Q: What other kind of classes do you take?

“I took mostly online classes for college, classes I won’t need to focus on my major.”

Q: Would you say any of those classes will help you with your chiropractic career?

“The one I’m in right now is lifetime wellness and it actually helps me a lot. It focuses on athletic prevention and how to diet yourself and just to kind of motivate you.”

Q: Do you do anything else that revolves around being a future chiropractor?

“Not right now but when I get into college I’m going to shadow.”

Q: Has being a volleyball player taught you anything about being a chiropractor?

“It taught me leadership and how to deal with people, which is something I really needed. I have a really short attention span and it’s kind of hard for me to focus, and I’m also really short tempered so that kind of helped.”

Q: What was it about Ottawa that drew you there?

“It was some place I was looking and then they reached out to me so I wanted to see how their science field was. It was small just how I like it. It felt homey. Our assistant coach went for a biology degree so I knew someone there was in the same boat as me.”
