The city of Warrenton and Meridian Waste will not renew their service contract at the end of this year, and the city has issued an open call for trash services beginning in 2022.
Both sides had decided not to renew their contract when it expires on Dec. 31, City Administrator Brandie Walters said during a Sept. 7 public meeting. Meridian has been Warrenton’s trash hauler since 2018, when it bought out Wilson Waste Systems.
According to a document released by the city, it was actually Meridian who first notified Warrenton in August that it did not intend to renew its contract with the city.
Walters said a request for trash haulers to submit service bids was issued at the beginning of September.
Over the last year, Meridian has been subject to complaints from residents in multiple cities, including for missed pickups, confusion over recycling services, and poor communication with city staff. Warrenton leaders last year went as far as threatening to cancel the trash hauler’s contract early if repeated complaints weren’t resolved.
Neighboring Wright City dropped Meridian as its trash hauler at the end of 2020, citing similar complaints and a push from citizens to get a new service provider. Meridian at that time pushed back against that decision, faulting Wright City aldermen for not choosing the most affordable option for trash service.
