Marthasville aldermen approved $5,550 to clean up and repair headstones in the city cemetery.
The contract was awarded to the Washington Monument Co.
The work is expected to take three days to complete. During the work, stones will be cleaned and as many stones as possible will be repaired, Mayor David Lange said.
“There are some stones out that that I know can’t be repaired,” Lange said during the meeting. “There are a lot of stones that are out there that are just tilted and he can just take a rod and raise them up, shove them against minus and pack them until they get them.”
Alderman approved the action by a vote of 3-0. Alderman Chris DeVore was absent.
Also during the meeting, Lange announced that the city had gotten the final easements it needed to extend Fifth Street to Tiffany Court.
That project, when completed, will provide a second route to reach Daniel’s Trail, Northridge Drive, Grand Avenue, TangleWood Drive, Boone Terrace Drive, Stegner Drive and more. Currently those streets are only accessible from Hiawatha Street.
“Say this tree fell over and blocked this street, you have 300-400 people back there trapped,” Lange said. “This will give them the other entrance out.”
