Letter: Warrenton aldermen comments are improper

To the Editor,

Regarding the vote on “R2” zoning application for the Country Lakes Estates Plat 1 ZC-62 on Sept. 15, it is troubling that two City of Warrenton Aldermen – Cheryl Dyer and Scott Schulze – made public comments on the Warren County Record Facebook page indicating viewpoints in favor of the R2 zoning. This is a big problem.

The two aldermen comments were posted prior to the public hearing, which is supposed to be a time for the board to listen to questions and thoughtfully consider the concerns of the Sunnyside residents whose lives and families will be affected by their vote, now scheduled for Sept. 15. Alderman Dyer posted, “Too bad,” in response to the full-page ad that was taken out in the paper by Sunnyside residents, just hours after the ad appeared on the Record Facebook page. Shortly afterward, Alderman Schulze “Liked” Alderman Dyer’s “Too bad” comment.

The actions by these aldermen are highly improper, disrespectful and prejudicial to the residents who are trying to protect the encroachment of the city of Warrenton into their lives on Sunnyside Road, which is in the county. We have no voice in city matters, yet we are in the position of defending our property rights in a matter the city has taken on, through annexation of a single piece of property being proposed for development in our rural neighborhood.

The total lack of fairness and the bias exhibited by these Aldermen is beyond disappointing and shouldn’t be tolerated. Their actions influence the decisions of the remaining four aldermen on this vote.

Is this the behavior constituents expect from their aldermen who are about to make an important decision, that will affect the livelihoods and that of families – their neighbors – on Sunnyside? Is this anyone’s idea of how the board makes a fair-minded vote?

These unprofessional actions compromise the integrity of Warrenton’s governing body, appearing to try to tip the verdict and the fate for the Sunnyside residents.

The city of Warrenton Board of Aldermen has now created discord with the county residents on Sunnyside Road. Will Sunnyside residents get a fair hearing on Sept. 15?
