Incumbents, retired teacher take clear wins for R-III Board

Posted

Warrenton-area voters broke heavily in favor of established school board members and a retired educator during local school board elections on April 5.

Incumbents Ginger Schenck and Sarah Janes were each elected to another three-year term on Tuesday. Retired teacher and frequent community volunteer Rich Barton was elected to his first term on the board to fill a one-year vacancy.

These three candidates, seen as representative of the current school district administration, were challenged by a slew of less experienced, but vocal community members who said they first took issue with how the district is being run during the response to the COVID pandemic.

Megan Lett, Carolyn Spraggs, and Sara Marcellino signed up to challenge Schenck and Janes for their seats, while Rachel Besselman was running for the one-year position against Barton.

Each of these challengers would have been new to the public sphere, and campaigned on platforms of transparency and responsiveness to parent concerns. Those messages apparently didn't resonate deeply with R-III voters, who strongly favored the winners in almost every voting precint.

Here are the vote counts at the end of day Tuesday:

THREE YEAR TERM (VOTE FOR TWO):

  • Sarah Janes -- 1,140
  • Ginger Schenck -- 933
  • Carolyn Spraggs -- 471
  • Megan Lett -- 193
  • Sara Marcellino -- 473

ONE YEAR TERM (VOTE FOR ONE):

  • Rachel Besselman -- 403
  • Rich Barton -- 1,306

NOTE: These are unofficial election results. Final election canvassing and certification will be done on Friday.

Correction: A previous version of this reporting unintionally omitted five ballots from Lincoln County , which provided five additional votes to Janes, Schenck and Barton.
