Four Warren County basketball players were recently recognized for their performances on the hardwood. Warrenton had representation on both the boys and girls GAC North teams. The Wright City boys placed two competitors on the Eastern Missouri All-Conference squad. Shakar Butler: Wright City senior garnered first-team EMO selection after leading the Wildcats in three categories. Butler led the EMO in scoring at 17 points per contest. He also chipped in 3.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Butler shot 51 percent from the field as the starting point guard. He was also looked upon to handle defensive pressure and distribute the ball. "Shakar had excellent command of our offense," said coach Mark Scacewater. "His ability to handle the ball and get to the basket was exceptional. I felt like he really developed into an all-around solid player during his senior season." Deon Bradshaw: Wright City junior used his shot-blocking ability to intimidate opposing offenses and gain second-team EMO recognition. Bradshaw contributed 12.6 points as the Wildcats' starting post threat. He was team leader with 10.4 rebounds, using his leaping ability to grab boards and alter shots. Bradshaw shot just over 50 percent from the field. "His ability to alter shots was a big part of our interior defense," said Scacewater. "He was a great complement to Shakar inside. If he can develop his confidence, he'll be fine offensively as well." Scotty Lathrop: Warrenton junior earned second-team GAC North honors. Lathrop averaged 11.3 points as the starting point guard and was a conference leader with 5.5 assists per contest. He accounted for 2.7 rebounds each night. Lathrop also served as the floor general for a team without a single senior in the lineup. His effectiveness penetrating off the dribble was pivotal for a Warriors' inside presence that lacked size. "What Scott brings with his dribble penetration is when guys cut to the basket, we get open looks because of the help defense," said interim coach Joe Klostermann. "His ability to dribble-drive really helps us out offensively." Sarah Foran: Warrenton junior hauled in GAC North honorable mention during her first season of varsity basketball. Foran became an aggressive force on the boards for the Warriors, sacrificing her body to dive and loose ball and crash the glass. While her overall season numbers do not reflect it, Foran became a consistent source of double-doubles by the end of the season. She was a team leader with 6.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Foran also got to the charity stripe more than any of her teammates, connecting on 53 percent of her attempts. "It's a big accomplishment for her to get chosen for this award," said coach Mike Twiehaus. "Once she got that experience and figured out she could battle inside, she started to excel. When she plays hard, she's a force. After Christmas she really went on a tear. She used her aggressiveness to take control and other girls wouldn't want to guard her."
