Election Turnout Expected to Be Low

Posted

With only a few races on the ballot countywide, the turnout for next Tuesday’s election is expected to be low considering that most of the contested seats have been low key with minimal campaigning — or none in most cases. Next week’s election features no municipal races in Wright City, Truesdale, Marthasville or Village of Innsbrook as well an uncontested race for three spots on the Wright City R-II School Board. There are no races for two of the three Warrenton aldermen seats that will be on the ballot. Based on the low-profile races and past turnout percentage, Warren County Clerk Barb Daly is expecting limited activity in the voting booths. She is predicting that the number of registered voters who cast ballots won’t exceed 10 percent countywide. She also noted that as of Friday, only 35 absentee ballots had been cast. In the April elections held the previous four years, the turnout ranged from 9 to 13 percent, including last year’s figure of 11 percent where an assortment of races were contested. Polls will be open Tuesday from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Absentee ballots can still be filled out up to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 4, at the county clerk’s office inside the courthouse in Warrenton. The clerk’s office will be open this Saturday, April 2, from 8 a.m.-noon to accommodate absentee voters. Ballots can also be cast at the clerk’s office from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekdays for voters who will be absent on Election Day or for other reasons. Voters are required to show some sort of identification when they vote, Daly said. The most popular forms are a driver’s license or voter registration card. Daly reminds voters in the Concord Hill and Hopewell precincts that they will be voting at the same location, the American Legion Hall north of Marthasville on Highway 47. Also, the North Hickory Grove precinct has no issues in next week’s election since there are three candidates for three seats on the Wright City R-II School Board and no races for the fire or ambulance districts. The only people who will vote in the North Hickory Grove precinct will be those living in Foristell city limits, though the three candidates there are all unopposed. Voting is held at the Wright City Lions Club for both precincts. The lone proposition on the ballot will be decided by Warrenton voters. The city is seeking to extend its western limits by 600 feet down the Interstate 70 corridor. The annexation covers only MoDOT right of way. The current western edge of the city limits is west of Pendleton Cut-Off Road. Contested Offices Four candidates are seeking three seats on the Warren County R-III School Board. The candidates include Teresa Scott and Beth Banze, both incumbents, and John Bradshaw and Lisa Wilmes. The top three vote-getters will each serve a three-year term. In Warrenton, Ward 2 Alderman Beth Kendall is being challenged by Jerry VanDillen. The winner will serve a two-year term. VanDillen also is one of two candidates vying for a seat on the Warren County Ambulance District Board of Directors. The seat, open in Subdistrict 1, will pit VanDillen against former board member Carla Turner. The winner will serve a three-year term. Voters in the southern portion of the county will be choosing between five candidates for three three-year spots on the Washington School Board. Candidates are Jennifer Triplett, Brian Sumner, Scott Byrne, Tommy Strubberg Sr. and Guy Midkiff. No Opposition In Wright City, Marthasville, Truesdale and Innsbrook there are no races for aldermen, mayors or trustees since incumbents are running unopposed in each city. Two aldermen races in Warrenton also are uncontested. Wright City Ward 1 Alderman Tom Black and Ward 2 Alderman James Toothman are running for seats they currently hold. Also running uncontested are incumbents Donald McGee and Adriane Null for two aldermen seats in Truesdale, along with Truesdale Mayor Murray Bruer. In Marthasville, Mayor Dale Verges is unopposed, along with East Ward Alderman John Graham and Southwest Ward Alderman Keith Hagedorn. Incumbents Jeffrey Thomsen, Jerry Rust, Peggy Morris have no opposition for three trustee seats on the Innsbrook board. Ward 1 Alderman Phil Tallo and Ward 3 Alderman John Clark were the only candidates to file for Warrenton alderman seats in Ward 1 and Ward 3, respectively. Also running unopposed are Village of Pendleton trustee candidates Rebecca Kilpatrick, Christopher Pottebaum Sr. and Karen Carr. There also won’t be a race for three seats on the Wright City R-II School Board since Melissa Springmeyer and Corri Ruge Olson, both incumbents, and Joseph Butterfield were the only candidates to file.
