Each time Megan Zykan heard her name called, she was almost caught off guard. The last time was well worth the suspense. Zykan was selected as the 2011 Warren County Fair queen during a coronation ceremony held Tuesday evening. "Honestly, I couldn't believe it," she said. "Every time my name got called my stomach dropped. I was in total shock. I don't think I could hear anything." Indeed, it was an unreal moment. Zykan topped 13 other contestants and was crowned by 2011 Fair Queen Kelley Rosemann. She received a $1,000 college scholarship. She also tied for first for top speech and top evening gown. "It's unbelievable, it's crazy," Zykan said. "This has been a fun experience. I knew even if I didn't get anything, I had more fun than I'd had in a long time. I met a bunch of amazing girls. I am so excited to come back next year and help the girls and show them confidence that they can do anything." A 2011 Wright City High School graduate, Zykan plans on attending Lindenwood University and majoring in early childhood education. Zykan, sponsored by FMB Bank, becomes the first Wright City graduate to be named queen since Michelle (Sylvester) Heiliger was crowned in 1987. Zykan said she is looking forward to a busy week of attending numerous Fair events and inspiring other young girls to follow in her footsteps. "I really want to know the county and the people in it," she said. "I have always loved the Fair. I am excited to be a part of it." Beth Etcher, sponsored by the East Central Missouri Recycling Center, was named first runner-up. She received a $500 college scholarship. She also tied for first for top interview. A 2011 Warrenton High School graduate, Etcher plans on attending Lindenwood University and becoming a middle school teacher. "It was so nerve-racking at first because there were so many good girls out there," Etcher said. "The girls were amazing. I had a great time doing it." Others who made the final cut into the top four were second runner-up Laura Freeman (Jodi Hayeslip Accounting and Tax) and third runner-up Alanna Hambach (Gastorf-Schrumpf Chevrolet). They received $400 and $300 college scholarships, respectively. Freeman placed in a tie for top interview and top evening gown. Hambach, meanwhile, was also recognized for selling the most season passes. She sold 43 passes. Brittany Greco, sponsored by Mark's Automotive Service, was named Miss Congeniality, an award voted on by the queen contestants. She received a gift basket with a value up to $500 containing items donated by local businesses. Greco, who has enlisted in the U.S. Army, said she enjoyed participating in the pageant and taking a break from her basic training preparations that starts in October. She added that she was honored to be chosen by the other contestants. "This was my last chance to be girlie and hang out with all the girls," Greco said. "It was breath of fresh air. I've been hanging out with a bunch of guys working out." Another queen contestant, Jenna Eads, was recognized for tying Zykan in the speech competition. Eads was sponsored by JBC Transport. Judging for this year's ceremony was completed just before the coronation ceremony Tuesday. The interview, speech and evening gown competitions were all conducted June 25. This year's pageant organizers were Andrea and Vickie Vohsen, Christy Bonstell and Lisa Chapman. The emcees were Dan Dieckmann and Rebecca Chapman.
