Zoe Duncan had quite a night for herself on Tuesday.

The Warrenton senior forward recorded her first career double-double, including career highs in points scored and rebounds.

The host Warriors needed just about everything she could give in earning the 43-32 win over Fort Zumwalt East – even if she wasn’t sure just how big her night was.

Zoe Duncan’s career night propels Warrenton’s hot start

Zoe Duncan had quite a night for herself on Tuesday.

The Warrenton senior forward recorded her first career double-double, including career highs in points scored and rebounds.

The host Warriors needed just about everything she could give in earning the 43-32 win over Fort Zumwalt East – even if she wasn’t sure just how big her night was.

“This feels really good and I just learned I got a double-double, so I’m excited,” said Duncan of her 21 points and 14 rebounds. “I feel, as a senior, it’s a big step for me to have good games. I know I have to step up and help my team succeed.”

From the opening tip, Duncan and Warrenton (4-3) put a vice on the game as the team jumped out to leads of 17-4 after the first quarter and 31-12 by halftime.

For as nice as Duncan’s 19 first-half points of her game-high 21 were, she said that it was a total-team effort that allowed East to jump ahead.

“We did it, as a team,” Duncan said. “My teammates fed me when I was (open) but we moved the ball and found people who were open. I scored, but it wasn’t just me.”

Warrenton fell back into an old habit in the second half, though.

The Warriors tallied just 12 second-half points as East shrank the lead.

Warriors coach Hannah Logan lamented the familiar feeling of dread out of the locker room.

“The first half, we really could do no wrong,” Logan said. “That did stem from our sharing the basketball. We weren’t sharing the ball as much, we weren’t getting any movement.”

Zumwalt East, on the other hand, was getting far too much movement as the Lions buzzed around the Warrenton basket.

“We were really stagnant on defense,” Logan said. “We were letting them drive wherever they wanted to go without stopping them.”

After Duncan, East got six points from Miller and five apiece from senior forward Makayla Witthaus and sophomore guard Claire Goldsmith.

The win gives the Warriors back-to-back victories and is the team’s third victory in the last four contests.

After a conference game with St. Charles West at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Warrenton enters play in next week’s Warrenton Winter Shootout as the No. 3 seed. The Warriors open play at 8:30 p.m. Monday against McCluer North.

“We all feel really good about this headed into the tournament,” Duncan said. “We know we can compete here as a team and, if we work together, we have a chance to win this. It’s something no team has done since we’ve been here. It would be great to win our tournament.”

NEWBURG BOYS 92, LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 76 – The big three continued on their usual scoring streak for the Eagles, but the team just couldn’t get much more going in a semifinal loss at the Battle of Bourbon.

Willy Mueller (28 points), Phoenix Obermann (27) and Tommy Meyer (15) combined for 70 of the team’s points. Mueller’s current consistent play also included 21 rebounds.

Liberty Christian (11-3) will return on Friday for the third-place game at 7 p.m. as the Eagles are set to take on Vienna (4-5).

LOUISIANA BOYS 58, WRIGHT CITY 40 – The Wildcats fell in the first round of the 29th annual Clopton Tournament.

Third-seeded Wright City (2-5) will play No. 8 Mark Twain (0-8) in a consolation semifinal at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
