To The Editor: To all members of nonprofit organizations, when you join an organization, you make a commitment to help that organization. To help that organization by attending the meetings, help with events and help with things around the place where the meetings and events take place. Some people join so that they can say “I’m a member,” and don’t do anything else to help. They leave it up to the officers and the ones who try to assist the officers, volunteers who don’t belong to the organization, which are not enough. Some programs have to be dropped because of the ones who say “I’m a member.” The officers cannot do all the things the organization would like to get done.An organization is only as good as the membership. Warrenton has lost a good organization because of its membership. The American Legion Post 122 has been in Warrenton for almost 96 years and is closed. It is too late to save since the membership did not attend the meeting or help in any events. The officers said they had enough at the final meeting Feb. 13 and filed bankruptcy. So how does it feel to just say “I’m a member,” and let a good organization go under? After all, you are the ones who did put it down because of your lack of good membership, so don’t just join, so you can say “I’m a member.” Become part of the organization as a worker or an officer. But do your part to make that organization one of the best.Someone who lost a great organization,Albert BrutonEx-finance officer for the American Legion Post 122Warrenton
