Keeton Young had himself a day on Wednesday – after the game’s first batter, that's it.
Young, the junior who started for Warrenton against Holt as Warriors junior Carter Martin was scratched due to illness, walked the first Indians’ hitter who came around to score.
And he allowed nothing more in Warrenton’s 5-1 win in a GAC Baseball Classic game played at CarShield Field in O’Fallon. It marked the second win in as many days for the Warriors over the Indians after a 15-6 victory at Holt on Tuesday.
“After that (start), I settled in and I started pitching better,” Young said. “My slider and a lot of four-seam (fastballs) were (working). You do get the chance to recognize (patterns in hitters). You’re like ‘oh yeah, that’s the same guy’ but it does work both ways.”
The familiarity might have hampered the offense for Warrenton (7-7).
A Young two-run hit in the first inning and a RBI hit from sophomore Keegan Lehmkuhl and a pair of runs scored on an error on a ball put into play by sophomore Tate Aulgur accounted for the rest of the runs scored.
Warrenton Coach Eric Burle commended his pitcher for not only settling in after the first batter of the game, but also performing exceptionally well in a surprise start.
“He only gave up three hits, two of which were infield hits,” Burle said. “I’m really happy with the way he pitched. He was thrust into that position because Carter has been out with an illness. To be able to perform like that after being put into that position was great out of Keeton.”
The only drawback Burle said he saw in the entire game came in terms of the team’s offensive output in the later stages of the contest, as Warrenton was shut out for the team’s final four at-bats. Still, the offense started strong.
“Our first 12 at-bats were quality at-bats, we chart that,” Burle said. “We kind of let our foot off of the gas, but it was huge to put up those types of numbers the first time through the order.”
Warrenton next returns to the diamond to host St. Clair (7-4) at 4:15 p.m. tomorrow.
WARRENTON GOLF TAKES SECOND AT HOME TOURNAMENT – The Warrenton boys’ golf team had an impressive day on Wednesday.
The Warriors, competing in the 50th edition of the Warrenton Invitational, took second in the team’s division with a total of 316 strokes, only to be bested by Orchard Farm (309).
Medalists were juniors Gavin Thompson (76), and Gavin Solari (77), sophomore Luke Bolm (79) and senior Eli Peth (84).
“We competed very well and accomplished a great team score,” Warrenton Coach Aaron Jinkerson said. “Even though the top four were happy to medal, they are hungry to accomplish even greater things the rest of the season after leaving some shots on the course during their round.”
WRIGHT CITY BASEBALL FALLS AT SILEX – The Wildcats’ offense was unable to produce anything more than one hit while the defense committed four errors in a 4-0 road loss.
Cameron Moyer’s fifth-inning single was the only hit the team was able to put up in the defeat.
Carter Pierson suffered the loss, allowing three runs, all earned, over the course of three innings of work.
Wright City hosts Orchard Farm at 4:15 p.m. on Friday.
WRIGHT CITY TRACK MEET ON TAP FOR TODAY – The annual Wright City track and field meet will begin at 3:30 p.m. today.
All three Warren County schools will participate as Liberty Christian and Warrenton will both compete, along with the host school.
