Wrongful death suit filed in electrocution

The wife of a man killed by an electrical accident in June has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against another person involved in the accident.

An attorney for Brenda Picker, of Warren County, filed the lawsuit in Warren County Circuit Court July 27, against fellow county resident Gary Pettig.

According to the court filing, Picker’s husband, Joseph, was killed June 1 while he and Pettig were attempting to relocate a metal carport. The lawsuit states Pettig was using industrial equipment to move the carport down a road. Joseph Picker was assisting, and maintained physical contact with the carport’s structure while in transit.

The lawsuit alleges that while driving the equipment just west of Schuetzenground Road, still carrying the carport, Pettig came too close to a live electrical line. An electrical current traveled through the structure of the carport and struck Joseph Picker, severely injuring him and causing his death, the lawsuit states.

“Gary Pettig was careless, reckless and negligent, and failed to use the requisite degree of care in moving the carport ... and avoiding energized electrical lines,” attorney Morry S. Cole wrote on behalf of Brenda Picker.

The lawsuit is seeking an unspecified amount of compensation in excess of $25,000 for Joseph Picker’s death.

An attorney for Pettig has not yet been listed for the case.
