That a write-in candidate won the race for the Marthasville East Ward alderman seat wasn't a surprise since no candidate was listed on the ballot.
However, what came as a shock to many was the write-in candidate who did in fact win.
Nick Lange was declared the winner with 23 votes in last Tuesday's municipal election, while Jim Struckhoff received three votes. Lange will serve a two-year term beginning this month.
County election officials initially believed Struckhoff was the winner since he had followed the proper procedures to be declared as a write-in candidate, which Lange did not.
But after conferring with the secretary of state's office and other county clerks, Lange was confirmed the winner since he had the most votes, County Clerk Barb Daly said.
