Wright City's Teacher of the Year has full-circle moment with former cheer camp partner — and now superintendent

Like Superintendent Dr. Amy Salvo, Wright City R-II teacher Rebecca Schreiner has grown up in the district.

The pair actually crossed paths back in 1998 when Salvo was a R-II high school student and a Wildcats cheerleader.

Schreiner said she remembers going to a cheer camp and being paired with Salvo for a cheer.

“I remember we were doing a partner cheer and Amy – now Dr. Salvo – pulled me to be her partner,” Schreiner recalled. “Based on my look, I would guess I was pretty nervous as I'm not an outgoing person, but Amy was there to help me along. Growing up in this district, and now being a teacher here, I'm so excited and blessed to work under Dr. Salvo, who loves our district and community as much as I do.”

Salvo said she also remembers their encounter.

“I was proud to encourage and cheer for her then, when I was a student myself, and I am even more honored to lead and encourage her now,” Salvo said. “Her impact on students and our district is something we are all incredibly proud of. The fact that we are both alumni of this great district is just the icing on the cake. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat.

“This is one of those truly special full-circle moments that reminds me exactly why we do what we do in education,” continued Salvo. “That little camper I was once cheering on as captain of the Wright City cheerleading squad has now grown into our 2025-2026 District Teacher of the Year.”

The superintendent added that having a young student grow into a difference-maker in the district’s classrooms is a powerful reminder that education is about so much more than academics; it is about building relationships, inspiring others, and planting seeds for the community's future.

As Salvo said, Schreiner, who has been with the district for five years, was recently selected as the 2025-26 Teacher of the Year. She is a Special Education teacher at East Elementary School.

“Being named District Teacher of the Year has been an absolute honor,” Schreiner said. “Out of all the amazing teachers we have here in Wright City, I consider myself lucky to be included among them.”

A district committee selects each year’s honoree.

In addition to Schreiner’s selection, the R-II district also named Jennifer Kellner, food service manager at Wright City High School, as the district’s Employee of the Year.

According to the district, Kellner, was recognized for “her outstanding service as a Food Service Manager at Wright City High School and her unwavering commitment to student nutrition.”
